Man City ‘impressed’ by 22 y/o, club ‘giving thought’ to signing £25m ‘prime candidate’

Fernandinho’s deal at Manchester City is up in July and it doesn’t appear he’ll put pen to paper on a contract extension, so the Sky Blues need to bring in a replacement.

Denis Zakaria, Ismaël Bennacer, Manuel Locatelli and Edson Álvarez have been linked with a move to City, but 90min believe Douglas Luiz is the most likely to be signed.

The 22-year-old left City for Aston Villa in the summer of 2019 and has made 57 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals with four assists. Luiz has shone in his 18 months at Villa Park and has ‘impressed’ City with his performances, so much so they could bring him back to the Etihad Stadium.

There is a £25m buyback clause attached to Luiz’s contract and 90min say the Sky Blues are ‘giving serious thought’ to triggering it. Pep Guardiola brought in Rodri as Fernandinho’s long-term replacement in 2019 and has handed him 78 appearances, but it does appear another defensive-midfielder is coming to Manchester.

Villa are hoping it won’t be Luiz as they’re very keen to keep him, but his performances have been monitored and admired. City knew the Brazilian international had the potential to grow if he received first-team football which is why they had a buyback clause attached.

90min say the Sky Blues regard Luiz as a ‘prime candidate’, so Villa have a fight on their hands to retain his services.
