The 20-year-old was sold to Schalke 04 in January 2019 but City put a buyback clause on the deal that they’re now considering triggering as Matondo has ‘caught the eye’ in the last two years.

He’s scored two goals in 32 games for Schalke and has joined Stoke City on loan until the end of the season. With no option to buy cited in the official club statement, Man City are free to make a move. The Telegraph say it will cost the Sky Blues £6.5m to sign a player Pep Guardiola called “incredibly quick” in 2019.

Although Matondo impressed at youth level for Man City with five goals and four assists in seven games for the U18s, three goals and two assists in 15 games for the U19s and 11 goals, and five assists in 31 games for the U23s, it remains to be seen if he’d break into Guardiola’s first-team.

City wanted Matondo back before Stoke signed him on loan, but time will tell if they can get a deal over the line.
