The People sports journalist Steve Bates seriously thinks Liverpool would be forced into selling Fernando Torres should Manchester City offer £100million for their prize asset.

Liverpool is under immense financial pressure, similar to Manchester United and likewise the Old Trafford club may have to sell Wayne Rooney this summer just to balance their books. Blimey, who would have imagined these sorts of scenarios 18-months ago?

Steve Bates: ‘£100million wouldn’t make any kind of a dent in the back pocket of Sheikh Mansour. City will really push on this summer, they’ve been really encouraged by what Mancini’s done in such a short time as the Mark Hughes thing wasn’t really going anywhere. They made a change and I think they will give Mancini a significant amount of money this summer to buy the players he wants.’

‘They’re looking at strikers who can really make a difference, not just in the Premier League because City have bigger ambitions than that. Mancini certainly will want to make headway in the Champions League if City manage to get there and I think they’ve got the capability to go and buy Torres. If Liverpool do not manage to qualify for the Champions League this season that is going to magnify the problems they’ve got on and off the pitch.’

Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has gone on record to say they would not sell Fernando Torres under any circumstances. I wonder?
