£25m-rated star who Guardiola branded “amazing” must be given Man City nod – Opinion

|

Man City’s summer transfer haul has seemingly grabbed all the headlines, particularly after we had our two-year Champions League ban overturned by CAS, with the club being linked to left-back stars Ben Chilwell, David Alaba and most recently Alex Sandro as a result.

That position, although currently uncertain, could be identified as one of the problem areas manager Pep Guardiola is looking to reinforce before the start of next season

So far, City have completed a deal for Nathan Ake, who can be deployed as a left-back, but that hasn’t stopped more rumours from cropping up since then.

Benjamin Mendy’s wobbly form and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s dip in performances have prompted the Sky Blues to look for outside help – but the answer may be right on our door step.

The forgotten man…

Angelino has become somewhat of a forgotten man since re-signing for City last summer after an excellent season at PSV Eindhoven.

Putting pen-to-paper in a £5.3 million deal, a transfer made possible through an inserted buy-back clause, the Spaniard has found opportunities at the Etihad severely limited.

Should Angelino be given another Man City chance?

Yes, he's impressed at Leipzig

No, not good enough

The 23-year-old started just four Premier League games before being shipped out on loan to RB Leipzig – where he has managed to rediscover his best form.

Bundesliga tactician Julian Nagelsmann spoke about taking up the option of signing the defender on a permanent £25 million transfer – but the financial implications brought on through COVID-19 has made it unlikely.

Leipzig take on Atletico Madrid tonight in what could be Angelino’s final game for the club, and judging by his performances, it’s fair to say he should be given another chance to impress Guardiola.

Past praise…

Back in 2016, despite later selling the youngster, Guardiola saw potential even so early on in his career – branding him and fellow academy defender Pablo Maffeo as ‘amazing’ following our 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich.

“Pablo Maffeo and Angelino – they played amazing,” said our boss to BT Sport via Goal.

“Of course Brandon Barker, Oleksandr Zinchenko – we need them to play in these games to see how their level is and find out whether during the season we can use them.”

The final verdict…

The answer to our left-back conundrum could well be Angelino, and given the fact he is homegrown, there are incentives to give him another shot.
