Zack Steffen looks on his way out of Manchester City this summer with Paul Tenorio of The Athletic revealing the 27-year-old is closing in on a season-long loan move to Middlesbrough.

City recently confirmed the signing of Stefan Ortega who will be Ederson’s understudy next season, so Steffen looks to have played his final game for the club. Managers don’t often substitute goalkeepers voluntarily, but the US international has gone backwards at the Etihad Stadium.

Steffen joined the Sky Blues from Columbus Crew for £6.1m in 2019 and has gone on to make 21 appearances in all competitions, conceding 16 goals with eight clean sheets. The 27-year-old has made only two Premier League appearances in three years, however, as Ederson has been undroppable.

The lack of playing time hampered his form, as Steffen looked short of confidence when called upon in the FA Cup last season. He made a costly error and let in two cheap goals as City were knocked out by Liverpool in the semi-final.

Months later he was dropped from the USMNT and Guardiola clearly wasn’t convinced that he put the mistakes behind him, so he’s been replaced. Steffen’s switch to Middlesbrough is only a loan, but he doesn’t have a future back in Manchester while Ortega is there.
