I was going to write an article this week on past city greats and ‘where are they now` but the way the week has been, it is half finished and not ready for publication. I therefore want instead, to throw a few thoughts your way and try and generate some debate.
My first thought revolves around the loquacious and silver tongued Mr Wayne Rooney who single handedly helped educate millions of youngsters last week in his own imitable Liverpudlian vernacular. This wonderfully colourful outburst engendered Mr Rooney with a two match ban for which he dished out an intelligently scripted apology designed by Big Red’s P.R. people to soften the blow. This was followed by the usual appeal! I along with all my fellow Blues, having heard the FA would not reveal its judgement until after the Champions League quarter final, thought that the Judgement would be lessened. This was however not the case and for the first time I can remember justice seems to have been dished out fairly by the FA with no controversy and no-one grumbling about favouritism. Is this because long time City fan and one time Chairman Mr Bernstein is now in a strong position within the FA? Has the tide finally turned and will we as City fans finally get some support from the ruling body? I would be interested to hear your opinions?
My second thought is of a totally different nature and revolves around someone who I have heard called past it, slow and being carried by the rest of the team when he plays. That someone is none other than one of Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles` Patrick Vieira. I believe that whilst he might not be as quick as he once was or as fit, he offers something incredibly important to the team and that is experience. Remember we are a very young team with few ‘elder statesmen` and at least one or two of our younger players have had issues both on and off the pitch. Added to this the real pressure and scrutiny every member of our team is under, I think Patrick offers something to the dressing room that is incredibly important and something we have as a club not had for thirty years. A leader, a winner, a nice guy and a man with incredible experience. Someone the youngsters respect and look up to that is always ready to offer advice, guidance and a helping hand. Indeed if Dedryk Boyota’s interview is read you can see how important Patrick has been to helping a fledgling team with many youngsters gel together and bond.
My final thought for the day is to ask has anyone noticed how the press is bigging up Spurs to take our Champions League spot away from us. Do me a favour, this assumes we won`t finish second or third and also assumes that a team that has scored less, conceded more, and won less will overtake us in the league. I think not. I also think that this team is fantastic, and is only one or two players ( a left back and a box to box midfielder) away from a truly world class team. This is not a team of mercenaries but a team of young hungry and professional footballers that believe in the project and believe they can be part of making City history. So bravo to our chairman and owners, bravo Mr Bernstein and bravo to the project! I am excited to be a blue!
