The date, Wednesday 19th August and another night of Manchester football to report upon.

First of all, Manchester United travelled the 30 odd miles to central Lancashire to play Burnley in front of a mere capacity crowd of 20,000 spectators. The result – a 1-0 win to the home side; the first time Burnley had won in the top level of English football for over 30 years. Was this perhaps a testament to the level of opposition they faced on the night?
United were not able to convert their usual penalty and even a team sprinkled with aged professionals such as Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Michael Owen had no answer to the Burnley outfit who are tipped by several pundits to finish bottom of the Premier League.
Looking on the positive side, star close season signing Michael Owen was able to complete 60 minutes of the match and is probably due a Premiership goal, his last being about eight months ago!
Secondly, we had Manchester City travelling to Spain to take on the European Champions Barcelona for a prestigious trophy, much valued by the Catalan team.
In front of over 80,000 spectators at the Nou Camp stadium City eased their way to a commendable and well deserved 1-0 victory against the Spanish side, which included in it such stars as Messi, Piquet and Ibrahamovic.
In the City side were young academy products Nedum, Onuaha, Kieran Trippier, Vladmair Weiss, Kelvin Etuhu and Shaun Wright Phillips, who of who acquitted themselves magnificently – together with Carlos Tevez, who in the close season quit Manchester United in order to join the Blues.
At the end of the match Manchester City captain Richard Dunne was presented with the magnificent gold and marble trophy to take back to Eastlands.
So yet another night of Manchester football ends with Manchester United drawing a blank and failing to win at lowly Burnley in front a dismal crowd; whilst Manchester City gave the European champions a good beating in front of 80,000 plus and returned to Manchester with a prestigious European trophy.
Typical day at the office really.
