Speaking at the Vodacom Challenge press conference, Emmanuel Adebayor insists that he joined City because they can be in a position to challenge at the top.

Manchester City clinched the signing of the Togo international on a five-year contract from Arsenal, who has since linked up with his new club on its pre-season tour of South Africa.

Adebayor is reported to have made the switch to Eastlands in deal worth around £22m and joins the likes of Barry, Carlos Tevez and Roque Santa-Cruz in Mark Hughes’ Champions League challenging squad.

The 6’3 striker stated that he signed for the club because he believes City can compete with the top teams in the league, and could even edge out Arsenal in the race for a Champions League spot.

In answer to City’s ambitious plans at the Vodacom Challenge press conference, the 25-year-old striker stated: ‘They have the players, they have the squad and they have the spirit to fight for the top four, and that is why I have signed for this club.

‘We will do our best, fight on the pitch and see what we can achieve.

‘I think we have a chance to fight against Arsenal, to fight against anyone to be in the top four.’
