Saturday 18 July 2009 Manchester City sealed their fifth signing of the summer – Emmanuel Adebayor from Arsenal, but is he a great signing or an expensive misfit?

Budding blogger Blue Lad Scragg sent us the following…

After some deliberation I have now changed my mind over the Adebayor move. Many City fans are not optimistic about the transfer and say that unlike the other signings made this transfer window Adebayor is not an essential player.

We proudly boast the most in depth striking force in the Premier League in Robinho, Santa Cruz, Adebayor and Tevez. Then of course we have more than adequate cover courtesy of Valeri Bojinov and Craig Bellamy. This in my opinion gives us the options you need to challenge in any competition, however, there is now just one problem, and that is the defence.

We are now building a squad which has options in all positions – a squad to rival that of ‘The Big 4.’ This has to be essential if City want to challenge for the top honours as the gaffer will need to be able to rotate the squad, but in the meantime he has to try and keep all the players happy. Wow that is going to be one heck of a challenge for a certain Mr Hughes.

Back on the subject of Adebayor – I actually think he will be a good signing. He showed everyone what a good player he was in the 07/08 season in which he scored 30 goals. However last season the Togo international struggled with injuries and was even accused of showing little or no effort / passion when playing for the Arsenal. I think this heavily dented his confidence and made him ask the question ‘Do I really want to stay and play for a team without loyalty and ambition.’

The 25-year-old has abundant talent and if Mark Hughes can ‘grab him by the balls’ then I do think he could bring out the best in him.

In summary, if we get the Adebayor who showed us the imperious form in the 07/08 season and looks hungry every game then he WILL be a fantastic signing. But, if the Adebayor turns up and looks off-colour and disinterested then the acquisition will certainly be a huge failure and Arsenal fans will have the pleasure in saying, ‘we told ya so.’
