VMC’s Lorna identifies the two men who’s form City’s title hopes rest upon…

No need for reminders as to how bad City were last season, but here’s one or two anyway. We lost out on the Premier League to Trafford United, crashed out of the Champions League in the group stages, finishing bottom of the group and to cap it all we lost the FA Cup to none other than relegated Wigan. Doesn’t make for good reading really does it??!!

I am going to edge my bets here and say that some of last season’s defeats could have possibly boiled down to two of our most famous and popular players not firing, namely Messrs David Silva and Sergio Aguero. I just don’t think City tick when they are not playing, or not playing well.

I know I shouldn’t really have a pop at Aguero as he was out for most of the season due to injury but we really did miss himself and his goals more than he would ever know.

When Kun is good he is very, very good. Famous throughout the footballing world, he has a massive profile and Silva has the potential to be one, if not the best playmaker the world over, let alone in the Premier League. I am the last person to ever criticise Merlin, but in the title winning season he was the key to our success, involved in most of the goals scored throughout the campaign. Then came last season, he had changed, his form was not the same, he wasn’t creative like he normally is and his assist rate dropped. His magic boots were clearly not working.

I know we bemoaned the fact that we lost out on signing 30 year old Van Persie but that’s history; Aguero, 5 years the Dutchman’s junior has the ability to eclipse his career achievements. Aguero is a finer footballer and I am going out on a limb here to say that Kun has the potential to score more this season than Van Persie and we all know that may possibly mean the honour of winning the Golden Boot. As long as Aguero stays focused, he has massive promise for a brilliant future in English football.

Taking it back now to Silva, as I stated above he certainly has the potential to be the most effective playmaker in the Premier League. Last season Chelsea’s Juan Mata created more assists than Silva in the top flight which in turn earned him the reputation of being regarded as the number one man to make things happen. But if Merlin can recapture his form from that famous 2011/2012 season, he will without a shadow of a doubt rival Mata and allcomers.

Mata may well have the terrific goal scoring record that Silva hasn’t but if Merlin does what he does best and provide the ammunition for Aguero with his 49 strikes in a little over 2 years, Edin Dzeko, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic, we are in with a bloody good chance of winning our title back and being crowned Kings of Manchester. Lest anyone forget, Manchester is BLUE.
