Just heard that Palace have accepted an £8.5m bid for the widely expected departure of Andy Johnson.
Not entirely a surprise in itself, but when I read down to see what ‘big’ club has gone in for him, I thought it was a mis-print when I saw it was Wigan !!
Now with respect to Wigan who had a great first season in the top flight, how is it that a smalltown club with no great football tradition can stump up that sort of cash, plus his wages, whilst City are scratching around looking for Bosmans and cheap big-club rejects? I just can’t get my head around it.
Fair-dos to Wigan for their ambition and why Johnson would want to go there God alone knows, but why can’t we make signings like that. Even Bolton put in an £8m bid !
I know we signed Samaras in the transfer window, but that was an exception rather than the rule and to be honest the jury is still out on him. I just have a bad feeling that we’ll end up with a crop of average and/or aging signings and we’ve already been linked with a few (Dickov, Fortune, Traore etc).
Now there was a great article posted on the site yesterday questioning City’s real ambitions, so come on Wardle and Co, let’s see City’s name in the frame for some quality signings this summer and not picking up the left-overs that none of the other clubs want. Bringing SWP back would be a decent starter for ten !
