An excellent week for results anyway, not our mounting injury problems obviously.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini has said the one nil win over Leicester this weekend was the perfect way to end an excellent week after we not only kept pace with Chelsea at the top of the table, but we also secure our place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Speaking to the Official Site after picking up another three points thanks to Frank Lampard’s 175th Premier League goal, the manager explained that we were certainly far from our best and that it was one of our worst attacking performances in recent weeks, but it was a professional and resolute defensive display that he took pleasure from.

‘I am very happy because today was a difficult game for us and it was a difficult week. We had to try and qualify for the Champions League, which we did, and then we had another game with 72 hours which isn’t enough time to recover physically or mentally. We were very unlucky because we were without Dzeko, Aguero and Jovetic, and it is difficult to play without a striker. But we managed to score one goal. To win one nil was very important for our team and we defended very well.’

Pellegrini goes on to say that in many ways, with injuries hitting, he knew in an attacking sense we wouldn’t be our normal selves so to see it play out that way whilst disappointing, for him, was thoroughly understandable so it wasn’t going to put too much stock in that and he felt the team coped well by making sure their defensive performance was spot on and we were in the position where one goal would win it.

‘I’m very happy with the whole week and with this game.’

Of course plans were interrupted ahead of kick off when Edin Dzeko injured himself in the warm up and we also lost Vincent Kompany in the second half, adding to Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic who were already out, and it appears all of them could possibly be missing until the New Year now.

‘We are without Dzeko, Aguero and Jovetic, for maybe more than a couple of weeks. We must see how long it takes Jovetic to recover, it is a difficult situation but we will see what is the best way for us to play.’

The way for us to play now is to rely on our goalscoring midfielders, and Pellegrini knows that will have to be the way forward until we get people back from injury now.

For Kompany the gaffer explained that he couldn’t last the whole goal, so it’s hoped it’s not an injury per se just more a fatigue/tiredness issue and that he’ll be back sooner rather than later after a good rest although that might be blind hope as I’ve just read other words from the gaffer implying that it might be ‘impossible’ for any of those listed to be back in December – we’ll have to see.

He also admitted that with the January window soon to be open, he would obviously be looking to the market as an option to help us out depending on how long players are now ruled out for.
