An Odd Suggestion?

Vital Manchester City received the following from member fifthcolumnblue.

Can I make an odd suggestion at this moment in time? I know many of you will be screaming for the rags to take down THAT banner. It’s hung mockingly in the Stretford end for years now, a testament to their success and our instability.

We Blues have had to contend with constant gloating at work and in the pub about how the reds were sweeping up every gong going whilst we were either fighting for our survival or fighting for promotion. As much as we love our club, the banner was always there to remind us that they were more successful than us. So I’m sure a lot of you will be wanting that banner to be torn down with immediate effect, and the players to burn it at a celebration BBQ at Vincent Kompany’s pad. But I’m not so sure.

We have at last got the silverware we have long desired; the monkey is off our back and in fine style. But what of the offending banner? That banner is a permanent fixture at the swamp. No gang of fans brings that banner to games; it is a fixture and fitting of the most revolting end of that most revolting ground.

‘How could this be’, I hear you ask. Surely one expects rival fans to engage in a bit of goading (hell, sometimes it’s even banter), but for that banner to become such a permanent fixture, surely there must be more afoot than mere rivalry. So what is it? Why it’s the basic insecurity and paranoia of our nearest rivals writ large.

They may have won everything there is to win; they may pretend that we don’t matter, that we are mere insignificant specks under their hack-boots. But that banner proves otherwise. That banner shows just how much the club next door, built on their win-at-all costs mentality is concerned with us at all levels, from boardroom to stands. They have always been worried about us, and now at last we’ve given them reason to worry about us. City are back. So my suggestion is…

Leave the banner where it is. Leave that snidest of digs at a rival to prove how much better than them we really are. Leave it as a testament to their lack of manners and inability to be gracious either in victory or defeat. Leave it up as a lasting monument to Manchester United’s utter lack of class at all levels.

Why should I care, I am a City supporter. And I’m over the blue moon!!
