There has been a lot written and said this season of the negative aura that seems to have taken over at Manchester City Football Club.
Perhaps it’s because we’ve all got first hand knowledge of what can happen when a club starts on a downward spiral (much as I enjoyed Wembley 99 I don’t wish to go back) or perhaps it’s just symptamatic of the modern game.
However there are positives that can already be taken from what has been, to date anyway, a pretty dour season for Manchester City.
Thirteenth spot in the Premiership is not much to crow about but hopefully the club is back on the up after last night’s defeat of Middlesbrough. The effort, in contrast to the Wigan defeat, was there for all to see and the result meant the blues had broken yet another of the hoodoos that linger over this club like a bad smell.
Boro, like Arsenal before them, had never lost to City in the Premiership (ok football was invented before then but it provides a benchmark). Much was made of this prior to last night’s fixture, with many blues predicting the end of Stuart Pearce’s reign if he was to be reliant on a result against one of our ‘bogey teams’.
Despite our record against Boro, City prevailed last night with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a Richard Dunne goal. Arsenal were dispatched earlier in the season by the same scoreline and two of the blues long standing hoodoos are now history.
Enough to be positive about? Well, coupled with the fact that City remain the only Premiership side yet to concede a goal at home you have to say yes. The club are perhaps moving forward, albeit slowly, and removing a number of typical City tags along the way. Now if they can build on the home form and deliver on their travels, plus also put to bed another hoodoo in the rags away, all will be rosy in the City garden.
