Kalvin Phillips was named in England’s 28-man squad ahead of their internationals with Italy & Germany and Vital Man City noted the 26-year-old was fortunate to make the cut given his lack of playing time this season.
Frank McAvennie believes Phillips is in danger of being left out of England’s World Cup squad, but he also says Jack Grealish could be left at home as he’s been in poor form since making the switch in 2021.

He told Football Insider: “(Gareth) Southgate won’t pick Grealish if he’s not been playing. I’m a big fan of Grealish so I hope he gets in.” The England international has failed to score or make an assist from five appearances across the board and has been substituted in his last two games.
Grealish has been benched twice due to poor form too, so his hopes of making the World Cup squad are at risk if he doesn’t improve. Southgate has a lot of attacking talent to choose from, so he might be reticent to pick the playmaker that isn’t firing on all cylinders.
City have five players in the latest England squad, but it remains to be seen if they’ll all make the World Cup.
