Bad news for 24 y/o as Man City ‘hope to recruit’ replacement ‘in that position’

Despite Oleksandr Zinchenko stepping up at left-back and dethroning Benjamin Mendy on merit this season, he might have some fresh competition in 2021/22.

James Ducker of The Telegraph says Manchester City have spent ‘several seasons adapting and improvising at left-back (and) hope to recruit in that position’ this summer.

Zinchenko has made 22 appearances in all competitions this season, featuring in 13 of City’s last 16 Premier League games. Mendy, however, has made only two league appearances since the turn of the year and has spent the majority of the campaign as an unused substitute.

City want to sell Mendy when the summer transfer window opens as his fitness woes have led to a lack of playing time while his lofty wages are a waste of money when he’s out of the side, but they’re struggling to find a suitor beyond Paris Saint-Germain.

Zinchenko isn’t likely to be sold, having signed a five-year deal in June 2019, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be commanding a starting place if City end up signing one of their transfer targets – Nuno Mendes, Robin Gosens, Nicolas Tagliafico, David Alaba and Gabriel Gundmundsson.
