Manchester City are reported to be holding talks with Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry over a proposed move to Eastlands.
A spokesman for Aston Villa has stated: ‘Aston Villa can confirm today that Gareth Barry is in talks with Manchester City.’
Villa’s American owner Randy Lerner had hoped to persuade Barry to stay at the midlands club and confirmed last week that they were in discussions with Barry regarding an improved contract.
Although it is clear that Manchester City are highly ambitious, the news will come as a surprise to some who thought that Barry would be heading to Liverpool in pursuit of Champions League football.
If this is still the case, the news of Barry signing will no doubt be a reflection of City’s top four ambitions next season.
