Big change: Man City may shock fans by selling underperforming £50.4m-rated star – opinion

|

Manchester City had a tough time last season in the Premier League, which was largely down to individual mistakes in games.

Finishing 18 points behind Liverpool in the chase for the title and conceding 67 goals from those 38 games is not where we want to be. A club like ours should be at the top, all of the time. Which of course, is easier said than done.

But we all know how ruthless manager Pep Guardiola can be, particularly when he first joined the club back in 2016. One of the first players to be immediately outcasted was Joe Hart, who was sent to Torino on loan and never played a first-team match for us again.

This seemed quite brutal at the time, but it was required for us to get back to the top of the standings once more. In came Ederson from Benfica for £35m a year later and was an instant success with us and a hit on the terraces.

The Brazilian shot-stopper played a big part in our Centurions campaign and the following year when we retained the title in what was an epic showdown with the Merseysiders.

However, last year, he was guilty for various errors which cost us at important stages of the season, most notably at Old Trafford against Manchester United. Even after Liverpool won the title, he was at fault during our 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

Now before you say it, I’m not suggesting that we would sell him this summer, that would simply be barbaric of us to do such a thing. But what I am saying is, the boss may not be so complimentary towards him if he has a similar season this year as he did during the last one.

The Spanish tactician moved quickly to dispatch of Hart, as I said, so there is no guarantee that he would stick with the £50.4m-rated keeper if he continues to make the same mistakes.

I will always have a special place in my heart for Ederson and everything that he has done for the club during his short time with us. But he really must eradicate some of the sloppy errors that we have been in recent months, or Guardiola could be forced to take action.
