Bizarre report claims Man City could agree January deal with Barcelona over 32 y/o [Opinion]

Ilkay Gundogan’s future at Manchester City is uncertain as his contract is up at the end of the season without a new deal on the horizon, but the 32-year-old is happy at the Etihad Stadium and is regularly playing under Pep Guardiola.

Xavier Munoz of Mundo Deportivo believes Gundogan could be on his way out earlier than expected, however, as Barcelona are trying to bring him to the Camp Nou on a free transfer.

The German international can agree a pre-contract deal with non-English clubs in January, but they’d have to wait until the summer to sign him. Munoz claims Barcelona could agree a deal with City to procure Gundogan sooner than July, but it’s hard to see Guardiola sanctioning a move.

Gundogan has made 20 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City this season, scoring two goals with two assists. The 32-year-old, who has made 65 caps for Germany with 17 goals and seven assists, has started both World Cup group games so he’s still a useful player for club and country.

Vital Man City believe a one-year extension for Gundogan makes sense as City aren’t blessed with depth in midfield, so it’s hard to see an early transfer getting over the line.
