‘Brilliant’ – Journalists say hard-working Man City player ‘ran the show’ v Real Madrid

Manchester City suffered a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday night, but Bernardo Silva can hold his head up high after a fantastic performance at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Sky Blues have been eliminated from the Champions League at the semi-final stage, but it wasn’t for the lack of trying from Silva. The 27-year-old started alongside Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri and thought he’d assisted the goal that sealed victory for City before their late collapse.

In the second half, Silva was picked out in acres of space and carried the ball 40 yards before setting up Riyad Mahrez to score from close range. Sadly, he ended up on the losing team but was the only midfielder not withdrawn by Pep Guardiola was spoke volumes about his performance.

Mike McGrath of the Telegraph gave the Portuguese international a player rating of 7/10 and hailed his work done at both ends of the pitch. Sid Lowe of the Guardian gave Silva a player rating of 6/10 and praised his ‘superb run’ that led to the Mahrez assist.

Stuart Brennan of the Manchester Evening News gave him a player rating of 9/10 and said he was ‘brilliant’ throughout. Jack Gaughan of the Daily Mail opted for a player rating of 8/10 and said Silva ‘ran the show’ for spells.

Against Real, the 27-year-old played for 120 minutes, had 94 touches, completed 89.6% of his 67 passes, created one chance which ended up an assist, had one shot, whipped in two crosses, found a teammate with 83% of his long-range passes, made two tackles, had one interception, made five successful dribbles and won two freekicks.
