You wouldn’t want new ‘keeper Willy Caballero to say anything other than ‘I want to be number one’ would you?
Why would City look to sign a ‘keeper, well any player, that is content just to be a bit part player in the squad? They wouldn’t would they, Manuel Pellegrini wants winners in his squad and that is what he has in the former Malaga man.
Joe Hart will again come in for competition for his place as the City no.1, arguably his greatest threat will now be faced in the form on the Argentine ‘keeper?
Caballero was given the nod for the charity shield defeat against Arsenal and this is a place he wants to keep, he said: ‘I want to be number one.
‘Both of us will train for that chance, but I came to fight for the number one spot.’
Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud might have all beaten him in Arsenal’s three-nil win on Sunday but, the obvious score aside, Caballero was happy to get his competitive debut out of the way and wants more.
Although he knows it is the manager who decides who plays this weekend, adding: ‘It was an important match for me. I have a chance to play. I am happy for this, but not for the score.
‘I have been training well, but there is no doubt that this was not one of my best games – they attacked three or four times and they scored three goals.
‘However, the decision (about who plays) is for the manager.’
Costel Pantilimon took Hart’s place for a while last season, his exit looked as though it could leave Hart with a relatively free run again this season but the experienced Caballero, well known to Pellegrini from his Malaga days, is likely to be Hart’s greatest challenge to date.
I am not so sure we can read too much into Pellegrini selected Caballero ahead of Hart for the charity shield but one thing that is certain, with the boss giving little away, is that the England man has a real fight on his hands this season!
From an England fans point of view I of course want Hart as the ‘keeper, but Pellegrini will go with the man he feels is the better option….
