Cheeky Joey In Trouble Again

Joey Barton could be in hot water again after Merseyside Police confirmed they had received complaints following an incident involving Barton at the end of this afternoon’s game, just after City had equalised with virtually the last kick of the game.

Joey was naturally celebrating in front of the City fans after Richard’s late goal had rescued a point, but it is alleged he dropped his shorts and exposed his ample backside to the obviously easily shockable Everton fans; in other words, a “blue moon” !

Stuart Pearce has confirmed that he will be looking into the incident:

‘The police approached me afterwards to make me aware of what had happened. I did not see it. But if anything did happen, we will look at it with an open mind and deal with it.’

I haven’t seen the incident myself yet, and I’ll be looking forward to seeing it on the TV highlights later tonight, but I can’t help feeling what a complete waste of Police time episodes like this are.

Even if he did moon at the Everton fans, that’s football for Christ’s sake! Lighten up people; the game is so regulated at the moment, if there can’t be any good natured ribbing, football is going to become a sterile and clinical experience that will drive even more fans away.

One of the best thing about match days is good-natured banter and ribbing between teams and fans. We need more of it, not less!

POSTSCRIPT
Since I wrote this original “tongue in cheek” article, it seems that immediately prior to the incident, Joey had gone over to a disabled young City fan and given him his shirt. Joey was then subjected to taunts by the Everton fans including some more offensive ones about his brother. Let’s hope that’s all taken into account before people start to criticise.
