City defender could be moved on this summer

|

According to a report from the Manchester City The Athletic correspondent Sam Lee/@SamLee, City left-back Sergio GomezĀ could be on his way out of the club this summer, with a loan considered likely but the club is not ruling out a possible permanent transfer for the 22-year-old. Gomez joined from Belgian club Anderlecht in August 2022 and has so far made 13 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions, providing a single assist which came in City’s 6-3 demolition of rivals Manchester United, in which Gomez drilled a cross across the 18-yard-box which was emphatically converted by Erling Halaand to complete the Norwegian’s hat-trick.

Gomez has struggled when given the chance so far this season, the Spaniard is defensively poor, his positioning is often a liability to his side, and he is physically weak and often physically dominated in duels against opposition wingers. The left-back has played in a multitude of positions in his short career, being deployed as a left-midfielder, a right-back, a right-midfielder and finally a right-winger.

The 22-year-old has been thrown into the deep end and made to play a left-back when clearly he doesn’t possess the necessary attributes to excel there long-term for Guardiola’s side. However, with the departure of full-back Joao Cancelo to Bayern Munich the City manager may have no other choice but to use Gomez from now until May, with City surely making the left-back position a priority in this summer’s transfer window.
