For the meantime it is difficult to say whether this fresh report is the sort of irritating space filling hackery long suffering fans in search of genuine transfer window information constantly have to put up with, or a genuine piece of news.
It is common knowledge that Petrov is fighting to secure his release from the Glasgow giants in order to pursue his ambition of a move to England, so it’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that someone somewhere has simply cut and pasted the names of the two contract rebels together in order to produce a new piece of ‘gossip’. However, if it were true then this possibility certainly throws a new and interesting angle into the mix.
If Celtic’s interest is genuine then Stuart Pearce will have to decide on the following:
Is it better to sell Joey to Boro, pocket the £3m and secure the proven but ageing Didi Hamaan on a free (on the two year contract he demands)? OR
would the smarter move be to do business with Celtic in order to snaffle Petrov, who by common consent been one of the most consistent players in the SPL over the last 5 years, and who might bring to City a much coveted combination of playmaking skills AND the ability to put a foot in and break up the play. The downside to the Petrov deal, of course, is the risk factor: whilst he is considerably younger than Hamaan he is as yet something of an unknown quantity in a more competitive environment.
One consideration might be the terms of the swap: would it be a straight one or would there be money involved?
Of the two options (assuming Quinton Fortune is now out of the picture and Thomas Graveson is out of our price range) who would you prefer to see at Eastlands next season?
