City Must Go Again For Agger

VMC’s Lorna Silva assesses Roberto Mancini’s defensive options with the new campaign imminent whilst The Blues continue the pursuit of Liverpool’s Daniel Agger…

City are set to make a third and most likely last move for Liverpool’s Daniel Agger as Roberto Mancini aims for the first signing of the summer in order to strengthen City’s defence before the start of the season, their earlier offers of £13 million and £16 million having been rejected!

Spanish giants Barcelona are also thought to be tracking Agger and they could rival City for the classy centre-back’s skills. 27 year old Agger joined Liverpool from Brondby in 2006, and currently has 2 years left of his contract, plus it is has been noted that no moves have been made by Agger or his agents to extend his contract with the scousers.

Liverpool Manager Brendan Rodgers is somewhat reluctant to part company with Agger which is quite understandable as Agger has the ability to get the ‘feel’ of a game early and has a ferocious shot often scoring from 35 yards! He has a Goal of the Month and a Premiership Goal of the Season under his belt and was given a fan’s award for impressive and solid displays.

A matter for conern however is that Agger can be injury prone. This could become a problem if he get’s injured early in the season.

The one thing that may finally make Rodgers give in to City’s offers is the fact that he needs cash to bolster up his squad and by accepting an offer from City will afford Liverpool the chance to progress into the top four in the Premier League with a stronger squad.

City have, without a doubt, the most formidable attacking squad which includes Ageuro, Tevez, Silva, Dzeko and Balotelli, all of whom are capable of stepping up to the plate and scoring fabulous goals, but the fact that we are The Champions means that we are going to need to defend more than ever before. All over United’s rag world there is a determination that they are going to regain their Championship title and they will be more determined, passionate and downright stronger than ever. They will attack every match. And every team. with ferocity. I guess you could look at every match as 11 Alex Ferguson’s because after all, every game is all about Fergie.

Roberto Mancini has made it quite clear that a new central defender is one of City’s top priorities and this continues to be where his intentions lie. If we don’t the unthinkable will happen.

Mancini continues to play his cards close to his chest when it comes to new signings which leaves the opposition, fans, and the media in limbo as to who we are going to bring in. Rumour has it that Kolo Toure is set to depart from City leaving just Vincent Kompany, Joleon Lescott and Stefan Savic (it is believed Wolves have expressed an interest in Savic after their own Christophe Berra asked to be placed on the transfer list) as City’s only three recognised centre-backs.

Once again, this is rumour, pure speculation. Yaya and Kolo have stated that they have ‘unfinished business’ with the African Nations, borne out of their defeat in January to Zambia. However, neither of them have expressed a desire to leave City. On the other hand, Kolo and Yaya will be going to the African Nations in January 2013 leaving a gap and Aggar can fill part of that gap.

For City to retain the title is going to be hard. All the teams in the top four, and below, are hungry for success. United have lost their grip of the top spot after 19 titles and now other teams see a way in.

This season is going to be harder than the last 44. It will be the hardest fight that Manchester City Football Club has ever had! This is going to be a fight for survival. United Manager, Alex Ferguson, will not let this lie as it is. However, City are here and we are not going away!

Since ‘our arrival’ nearly every team in the league have bolstered their defences…I sense fear and uncertainty within the hearts of our opponents.

Is it our formidable force that puts others on edge? Or, is it the fact that United have been toppled from the top spot by someone more formidable than them!? Either way, Manchester City are responsible and we’re not going anywhere!
