The England Women’s side finished in third place at the Canada 2015 World Cup, capping a World Cup of firsts by taking victory over Germany for the first time.

With many in the wider world writing off the Lionesses before a ball had even been kicked, their achievements the last few weeks include taking their first ever World Cup knockout stage victory, reaching the semi finals for the first time and in finishing third, their best ever World Cup tournament.

Not least a first win over Germany in 21 attempts – and from the penalty spot!

Playing their part in that was our very own Lucy Bronze, Jill Scott, Steph Houghton (skipper), goalkeeper Karen Bardsley and Toni Duggan.

All played their parts to varying degrees, but largely it would be hard to deny Houghton and Bronze stole most of the headlines with Bronze herself picking up a nomination for the Golden Ball award (best tournament player) having scored against Norway and Canada.

City’s WSL season kicks off on Sunday July 12 at 2pm as we host Birmingham City at the Academy Stadium.
