City will travel to Streymnes in the Faroe Islands on July 17th to take on EB/Streymur of the Faroes Formuladeildin top flight in the UEFA Cup…

The 1,000 capacity Við Margáir stadium is sure to be packed to the rafters when The Blue Army invade to watch Mark Hughes lead his City side out for the first time in a competitive match.

‘The team is a result of a merger in 1993 between Eiðis Bóltfelag founded in 23 February 1913 and Streymur founded in 1976. Prior to the merger, both EB Eiði and Streymur usually played their football in the second or third division. After the merger in 93´ the team still resided in the lower divisions, but this was about to change. With a new built soccer ground at Mølin, Eiði, and a healthy injection of young talent. Among these talented players were: Hans Pauli Samuelsen, Bárður Olsen (Haldórsvík), Brian Olsen (Tjørnuvík), Marni Djurhuus, Gert Hansen, Arnbjørn Hansen (Kollafjørður). These talents had an unique understanding of oneanother, and they were quickly incorporated into the best EB/Streymur side. With the help of veteran attacker Jon Sigurd Gledisheygg, the team won promotion in the 99/00 season, placing second, behind B36.

EB/Streymur has since gained a foothold in the top division (Formuladeildin), as title contender. Until 2008 their best results were in 2006 and 2007 when they finished second.

As of 2008, EB/Streymur has never won the Faroese championship neither before nor after the merger, however on 15 August 2007 and again on 14 June 2008, it won both its first and its second title as Cup holders.’

The return leg will of course be played on July 31st at the Bon Jovi inspired Oakwell, Barnsley.

Will City tater Streymur or will the Faroes spirit that we have seen so many time at International level make this a close encounter for The Blues…?
