Manchester City have given up on signing Everton’s Joleon Lescott in favour of Newcastle United defender, Sébastien Bassong.

Mark Hughes and his negotiating team have been left frustrated with the Toffees board especially after they keep holding out for more money, and now we understand City have turned their attention to Sébastien Bassong.

Other contenders for the Frenchman’s signature include Arsenal, however the 23-year-old is thought to favour Manchester City.

Bassong told France Football…

‘Foreign teams have made enquiries but as my priority is to stay in England, I haven’t followed them through. Clearly it would be better if everything went quicker but I am not worried.’

‘Some Premier League clubs are interested in me but not everything is simple given that Newcastle are in the process of being bought out and the name of the future manager is still not known.’

Bassong is a graduate of the famous Clairefontaine youth academy. It has a high reputation of producing some of the world’s most gifted players, including the likes of Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka, William Gallas and Louis Saha.
