France Football Magazine reveals this week how City benefitted from the gruelling 16 game UEFA campaign that repeatedly threatened our league status last season…

…and it was in the club’s wallet no less!

‘La Bible Du Football’ firstly confirmed that in the 2008-09 UEFA Cup, beaten finalists Werder Bremen earned the most money from the tournament, ?7.1 million (£6.08 million).

The Blues, who reached the quarter finals raked in the second largest amount with a ?5.3 million (£4.5 million) haul from the campaign that frankly came a season too soon in the squad’s redevelopment.

These figures will come as a surprise to many Blues, particularly the hardy souls who braved freezing elements at a half full Eastlands for the majority of the home legs at reduced prices. Furthermore, that blockbuster night against Hamburg where admission prices of £5 were offered by the club in recognition of that support could hardly have boosted the Euro coffers.

Meanwhile, the Champions League figures give an indicator of the gulf that exists between what is essentially the G14 elite clubs competition and what will be next season’s Europa Cup.

The massively in debt Manchester united creamed a whopping ?37.9 million (£32.5 million) to ease the blow of their cup final humiliation and mounting loan interest. Cup winners Barcelona by contrast grossed the second largest sum of ?30.9 million (£26.5 million).
