City kicked off their Pontins Holiday League division one west with a satisfactory victory. Goals from Daniel Sturridge and Antoine Sibierski; both in the first half, made it a winning start for the Citizen’s second string.

The game showed a gulf in class right from the outset as Wrexham had the attitude to go in hard and early and the incompitent referee and his officials, who was more Maplins than Pontins seemed oblivious to these antics.

City had to make an early change as Matthew Mills was forced off with a head injury with a clash of heads whilst attacking a free-kick in Wrexham’s penalty area. This may have been a good thing as the early stages of the game showed up his poor positioning yet again.

City took the lead in the thirty third minute when Kelvin Etuhu made his markers look like mugs on the right and sent a lovely weighted pass for Sturridge to run onto and finish under the legs of Michael Jones in the Wrexham goal.

Three minutes before the break, City doubled their lead. This time it was Ishmeal Miller down the left hand side that delivered the cross that Sibierski put past Jones, how he did it was unclear from my vantage point, but to all in tents and purpose Antoine did not have a clue about the ball and it just went in off him.

The second half saw Sturridge have a good turn and shot that went just wide and Weaver made a great full length stretched save from a curling cross from Trinidad & Tobago international, Josh Johnson.

City’s next Pontins game is next Wednesday, away to Chester with our first 2pm kick off.
