Australian resident and Vital Manchester City regular, Doody sent us the following article prior to Saturday’s 1-0 win over Middlesbrough.
There has been a lot of press and posting on various forums calling for the sacking of Mark Hughes, with supporters well to the fore!
I must state up front that I am not a fan nor am I a knocker of Mark Hughes as our manager, the reason is it is too early to make a sensible well thought out decision. The man has only been our manager since the beginning of the season. He inherited a team that had five wins – 4 draws – 9 losses in its run from January to the end of the season in other words out of a possible 54 points we got 19.
To rebuild that team he has added some players that fans being fans felt would not have been their choice but fans are not restricted by money, time and reality. He has now started to create a team he feels can begin to change that downward trend of the latter half of last season.
The latest four new players have not yet even played one match together so they can hardly have become used to each other`s game, yet it is obvious from postings on all forums that supporters are nothing if not impatient, with instant results being the only criteria of success or failure.
We need to understand that getting the team right is not something that is going to happen overnight and therefore we need to stop judging him from Saturday to Saturday.
We need to take the same period from last season and compare it to this season and his team if we are to be fair. So why don’t we reserve judgement until May, when we can then make a rational and informed decision based on the last 18 games of the season using his team.
By the way his score so far in the first three of those 18 games is 6 points from a possible 9 meaning we need to win 5 of our last 15 games to better last years performance. So let us see what his final tally out of the last 54 points is in May. Meanwhile, remember being a Manchester City supporter does not stop on the pitch it is about THE CLUB not just the team and management is part of the club.
This club needs some stability, we have had 17 managers since 1986, which is the year an unmentionable team hired a Scot, and while I do not admire that team, I do admire their stability and what it brings.
Mark Hughes will get from me the support he deserves as OUR manager until he proves himself or fails and that will be at the end of this season.
