The unexpected departure of Andy Cole looks more likely this evening. There had been rumours linking him with a surprise move to Bolton, but it looks like he’ll now be teaming up with City old boy David James at Fratton Park.
The rumours have strengthened today with City feeling compelled to release the following statement:
“Manchester City can confirm that while we do not wish to lose Andrew at such a late stage in the transfer window, he has expressed a desire to leave the club and join Portsmouth.”
Cole has been out of action for a few months with a bad knee injury, but is now nearing full fitness. His departure will be a blow to City who so far this season have looked pretty inept in front of goal with only a single score to their name so far…. and that was a penalty. Despite his age, Cole showed last season he is still a lethal finisher in and around the box and has plenty of goals left in him.
If Cole does go, let’s hope he doesn’t go on a free and City manage to get a decent fee for him; in other words ‘ Pay Up Pompey !’
