Auctioneers ‘Sportingold,’ based in Northampton, who specialise in auctioning sporting memorabilia, today handled the sale of ten of Colin Bell’s England caps amongst other classic memorabilia.

A footballing treasure chest that would form only part of a truly great career. I understand that the auction generated massive interest.

The items went under the hammer at Northampton Rugby Club`s Franklin`s Gardens ground.

The King’s caps went for between £1050-1300. Total receipts were estimated at around £25k.

It’s sad and equally poignant to note at the same time that that total is far less than what the majority of young England players earn in a week. When you consider Micah Richard’s protracted contract negotiations it’s a head shaker.

City’s Official site ran a news article advertising the auction earlier this week but gave no background as to what had prompted the sale.

All together now..’Number One is Colin Bell, Number Two is Colin Bell…’
