South African based Manchester City fan, Mariner, sent us the following.

With only about nine months to go before the big kick off, there is a sense of chaos in the South African football hierarchy. Although it is not considered a good thing to change horses in mid-race there has just been an election for the Presidency of the S.A. Soccer Administration.

The contenders were Irvin Khoza, the charismatic owner of Orlando Pirates, Danny Jordaan, Head of the World Cup Bid Committee and a gentleman from Limpopo called Nematandani.

After an abusive campaign in which the credentials of Danny Jordaan were questioned both he and Khoza stood down, leaving Nematandani as the uncontested winner.

I mentioned earlier that the coach, Joel Santana was picked purely because he was recommended by his predecessor, who himself had not done terribly well. Santana, who has never coached a club side, let alone an international one has an abysmal record.

Having lost the man who appointed him, surely he must feel his future is squarely on the line. But, is it wise to change the chap with the countdown ticking to the greatest tournament on planet earth?

Another blow to football over here occurred in this weeks game between Everton and Portsmouth, when Steve Pienaar was injured by Aaron Mokoena, a fellow South African, There’s irony for you!

A word of warning to potential visitors

Our public transport situation is pathetic. Durban has just spent five months without a bus service what-so-ever, simply because the company who had been outsourced to run the service had, through downright mismanagement and financial peccadilloes been unable to pay their staff.

This was followed by a series of strikes and eventually the company couldn’t take anymore and folded. Now we have another one in place but it is doubtful they will be able to do any better. Of course we live in hope.
