Cristiano Ronaldo to Man City – Pep Guardiola’s unlikely plan B after Harry Kane blow [opinion]

Manchester City have likely missed out on signing Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur after the 28-year-old released a statement saying he’ll remain in North London this summer, but Sky Sports say they have other irons in the fire.

Cristiano Ronaldo is believed to be a genuine target for City and could be available this transfer window as he wants out of Juventus. The 36-year-old is out of contract in 2022 but wants to leave a year early as he’s grown disillusioned in Turin.

Whether the Portuguese international would join the rival club of Manchester United remains to be seen, however. Ronaldo scored 118 goals and made 69 assists in 292 games for the Red Devils between 2003 and 2009, so he has an affinity with the club.

That being said, Ronaldo would improve the City attack. He’s scored 101 goals in 134 games for Juventus (2018 – present) and had a hand in six goals during the 2020 European Championships this summer.

Pep Guardiola’s only natural striker in the side is Gabriel Jesus who struggled for consistency last season, so Ronaldo wouldn’t be the worst player to spend €25m (£21.4m) on.
