‘Decision will be made’ – Guardiola clarifies Man City future amid contract uncertainty

|

Pep Guardiola has been in charge of Manchester City since 2016 but is out of contract at the end of the season.

The 51-year-old, who managed Barcelona (2008-2012) and Bayern Munich (2013-2016) has presided over 374 matches in Manchester but could leave next summer if he doesn’t put pen to paper on an extension.

Guardiola isn’t worried about his future, however, as he’s happy to stay beyond 2023 and told BBC Sport that a new deal will be on the table eventually.

Will Pep Guardiola leave Man City next summer?

Yes

No

Pep said: “The decision will be made together with the club the moment it has to be made. I said many times, I had the feeling that both the club and myself are happy to be together.”

City are currently second in the Premier League with 32 points from 14 games this season, though they suffered a defeat in their last outing. Guardiola has won four league titles, four league cups and one FA Cup with the Sky Blues, so his six years at the Etihad have been successful.

And although City have yet to win a Champions League, reaching the final in 2021 and the semi-finals in 2022, the club hierarchy won’t want to lose Guardiola. They’re currently in the last-16 and are among the favourites to go all the way.

The rumour mill in May suggested Pep had signed a three-year deal at City in principle, but there’s been no update since. And his latest comments confirm no agreement is in place, so the past report was pure speculation.

It’s hard to see Guardiola leaving as he’s backed unconditionally by the board, but fans will be worried until a new deal is announced.
