Manchester City have this evening confirmed the capture of England and former Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph.

Having been set for a medical before changing his mind and releasing a statement saying he was remaining at the Midlands’ club and looking forward to captaining them this season, a further change of heart saw him head up for his medical earlier today and having come through that with flying colours the finer details were put on his personal terms and he now follows Raheem Sterling into the Etihad as a new signing.

The 25 year old has put pen to paper on a deal that will see him remain with us for the next five years and he has already been handed the No 18 shirt for the coming 2015-16 campaign.

He is set to join the side out in Australia over the weekend.

Having begun his career at Leeds United, he went on to make 50 appearances for them between 2006 and 2009 and he was named their Young Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year in 2009. That year also saw him feature in the PFA League One Team of the Year and saw him crowned the Football League Player of the Year as well to cap a fine campaign.

With his stock rising and him gaining a lot of interest that summer, he made a reported £6.5million move to Aston Villa that summer aged only 19.

A series of serious injuries then held him back in his initial years with them, but having battled back from that he went on to become a key member of their team and picked up their Player of the Year Award for 2013-14.

He leaves Villa having made 128 appearances for them, with a return of eight goals and he leaves as their skipper.

England wise, a former under 19 and under 21 international, he gained his senior call up back in September 2014 against Norway and has now picked up six full caps.

Speaking to the Official Site manager Manuel Pellegrini said of the confirmation.

‘Fabian Delph is an excellent player, and I am looking forward to working with him. He has made a huge impact in recent seasons at Aston Villa, and is now one of the brightest young midfielders in the Premier League. Fabian has tremendous skill and energy, and the fact that he has become a regular member of the England squad is further evidence of his progress over the past few seasons. At just 25 years old, he still has his best years ahead of him.’

Welcome Delph.
