Desperate for Rooney?

How astonishing that today’s papers are full of the kiss and make up arrangements emanating out of Old Trafford.

The man Robson who allegedly writes in the Manchester Evening News says it comes as a shock for City who ‘were desperate to sign him’. Now where did that come from?

As the scribes and Sky tried hard to get a comment off the great Mancio, he maintained a silent vigil muttering only that the situation would be reviewed in the summer.

Ladies and Gentlemen it is clear that it was the newspapers who ‘sold’ Rooney to City and nobody else.

The fact is that nobody really goes hunting for a major signing in January. What good would he be to Real Madrid or Barcelona who would be unable to field him in the Champions League? The same could be said for Chelsea. True he wouldn’t have been able to play for City in the Europa Cup, but in some ways he might have helped us win the title.

In the end when all the possibilities were being charted City would have been the only probable destination for him in January, so any transfer would have had to wait until June when it is dangerously close to the end of his contract. So enter the ‘maestro’.

Ferguson and Rooney kiss and make up? No, sir. Rooney insists that they add to their debt woes and they agree, knowing full well that they’d get nothing from him this season on the ridiculously low wages he was receiving, and they would get nothing for him if they left it until the end of the season.

I sense an unhappy truce here whereby in June off he pops for loads of loot hopefully from Fergie’s point of view with some sort of player exchange so that he can be assured of new faces around Stretford. Otherwise, it’s another £80 millions worth of interest payments and more Machedas, more Bebes, more Rafaels and more routes to the exit for any reasonable players they might have left.

It is said that his comeback will be against us. Well so what? He’ll be a bit ring-rusty and whilst Mancini is platting their downfall Nigel will be busy looking at DVDs of his in-plaster left ankle.

I have also noted this season that Howard Webb hasn’t had a really tasty match. He might have had the Everton – Liverpool derby last week but his calendar has been full of Fulham v Wolves, Stoke v West Ham and the like. How much are we having on him being in charge of the match on November 10 where he will be looking to make up for what he perceives he missed in the World Cup Final, potentially leaving us a man short if Nigel steps outside of the circle and mistimes a tackle (or makes one he considers too robust). Food for thought I think.
