Isn’t it great to see City in such a lofty position in the league at least half way through the season.
Sven I have to admit has done a wonderful job with blending and getting more out of the existing players with bringing in quality new players in the summer.
I hold my hands up as a big England fan who travels home and away to watch them, I really did not want Sven to take the job; but how pleased am I to be eating humble pie, keep making me eat it I say.
Clearly Sven has seen with the rest of us that there is some dead weight in the squad that needs culling. But on the flip side their is so much young talent that is close to being first team regulars that it is impossible to play them all. And there in is the crux to this article. We all know that Sven has the cache and reputation to bring in quality players; but maybe Sven may struggle to attract the qualities of say Steven Gerrard et al to a squad that at the moment is riding high, but until the end of the season you do not know whether City will be in that coveted fourth place, UEFA placings or just outside.
The bookies are rarely wrong and odds are pretty even with around three or four teams challenging the 4/5th spot.
So does Sven take the big gamble and try to acquire a couple of top players; but if so where would these top players fit in to what we can see is a great team ethos in the way that the whole team celebrates together. Bringing in what you might describe as superstars might not be the way to go.
As mentioned earlier bringing in more players will also make it harder for the younger players to get first team games.
You only have to look at Arsene Wenger and what he has done at Arsenal. They have not won the title since the 2003/4 season and since then he has got rid of his big stars and brought in young talent and nurtured his existing youngsters to a point where you can see arsenal be a top force for the next three or four seasons.
I think City and Sven should follow this philosophy and build for the long term and not try to hurdle as well as sprint.
Bringing in Castillo was a great move and maybe one other; my choice would be a decent experienced goalkeeper to back up Hart as I would let Isaksson leave.
