We expected there’d be more coming out over Richard Dunne’s deadline day plus one transfer to Aston Villa and the man himself has had a word with Murdoch’s Sports News…

Clearly unimpressed, the former Blues talisman said:

‘I’m not hurt to leave City, I’m just hurt the way in which it was dealt with. It wasn’t the best way they went about things, but that’s a different story. They signed the players and that was it. I wasn’t given the opportunity to stay and fight for my place. That’s what was annoying.’

Villa’s new £6 million signing went on to give the impression he was forced out of SportCity:

‘I was told I had to go and that’s the frustrating part about it. They told me they had accepted an offer so I said ‘OK, but what if I want to stay and fight for my place?’

Fair enough, but bizarrely, Dunney followed up with this intriguing sentence:

‘They said …it’s funny, we need the money.’

Cue sport’s hacks leaping out of the bars to proclaim that City are going bust!

To his credit, he went on to praise the club and it’s fans who’ll be pleased to reciprocate but at the same time will be wondering what all that was about above:

‘I am not bitter, I really enjoyed my time there and wish them all the success. The fans have been fantastic to me there and they have been crying out for success for such a long time. Now they seem to be on the brink of it and I hope it all goes really well.

‘It’s a really good club, an enjoyable family club and I just hope they get what they deserve.’

It might be prudent for Mark Hughes and Garry Cook to offer some words of clarification on this one.
