Manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that Edin Dzeko will sign a new contract with the club shortly.

Following on from Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero all agreeing new five year deals last week, and with Samir Nasri and Aleksandar Kolarov having signed new extensions prior to that, it’s been known for a while that discussions were ongoing with the striker, and the now the gaffer has confirmed to the press that whilst the deal isn’t finalised yet, it’s practically verbally agreed.

‘I don’t think it’s 100% finished yet but, yes, he will renew his contract. He’s a very important player for us. It’s very important that we have four top strikers because we have so many games in four competitions.’

Last season was the most prolific for the 28 year old after joining us, as he bagged a total of 26 goals across the campaign and Pellegrini went on to say that he felt he was one of our best players in the season opener against Newcastle United on Sunday and not just because of his assist but his overall performance and the holding play and aerial challenges he was winning.

‘It was a very complete game, but I think that Edin finished last season playing the same way as he’s started now.’

If those performances continue, and he gets his goal touch back over the coming weeks he could have an even better campaign for us this time round.
