Shouldn’t Edin Dzeko be encouraging players to come to the club? Not ‘put them off!’ He’s been quoted as telling a German magazine former Chelsea man Kevin De Bruyne might be better off staying with Wolfsburg.

I’m not sure if Dzeko is doing this as a player leaving the Etihad Stadium this summer, doing this as a player that knows his days are numbered so we want him to leave the Etihad Stadium or is doing this as a player that wants to ward off further competition for his place?

Either way, given what the London Standard – among others – have quoted him as telling German magazine kicker, he might have been better advised not saying what he had….

‘Top players like Kevin De Bruyne won’t stay at Wolfsburg forever. Everybody dreams of one day playing for a leading international club.

‘He’s supposed to be a prospect for us in Manchester. Kevin has an advantage. Through his time at Chelsea he knows the Premier League and knows that it’s completely different.

‘A lot of players who excelled in other leagues have had problems here – take Angel Di Maria.

‘I’m certain that (Kevin) has what it takes to play for one of the top clubs in Europe but he’s also aware that at these clubs there are 20 top players who always want to be on the pitch.

‘Maybe it would also help him if he plays in the Champions League with Wolfsburg this season and takes another step in his development there.’

In defence of Dzeko he’s arguably not saying anything many might not have thought but as a City player, and until he does complete a move to Roma – if he does, as seems to be the most likely course of action – he might do well to remember this!

As it happens, despite perhaps making some at City a little unhappy with his comments, I wouldn’t have thought it’ll have much baring on what does happen as regards to De Bruyne coming to the club or not this summer anyway.

He’s had a taste of the Premier League, has gone away and done the business in Germany, so if he’s ready for a return and wants to sign for City – more importantly we want him to sign, as its nothing but ‘speculation’ at this stage – he will, despite Edin’s ‘best efforts!’

I’m not sure about a £50m price tag mind….
