A young City EDS team performed excellently to maintain their unbeaten record by beating Blackpool 2-1 last night at Ewen Fields, the home of Hyde FC.
Like most teams, Blackpool ‘beefed-up’ their team to include Marlon Harewood, Jason Euell, Keith Southern and Brett Ormerod in their bid to beat the Blues and under the watchful eye of Ian Holloway, Ormerod opened the scoring after 9 minutes with a left to right cross shot that crept in by the far post giving Gonzales no chance.
This forced City to step up their game with neat passing moves attacking from wide or inside and with 26 minutes gone a pass from Poole found McDermott who scored from a narrow angle.
It was McDermott again who stunned former Hyde loanee Halstead in the Blackpool goal, but either way he did well to turn it onto the post.
Gonzales was forced into action again to make a smart save from Euell before City went ahead after 41 minutes when McDermott returned the favour to Poole who scored with the aid of a deflection.
In the second half both teams fought hard and there was no chance that Harewood, Ormerod and Euell had come along for the ride. Indeed, Ormerod was unlucky to see his superb effort rebound off the bar, with Gonzales well beaten and his follow-up cleared away by Mee on the line.
The youngsters then set about closing this match out which they did quite professionally and in the end were worthy of their win in front of 602 customers who must have enjoyed this football.
Andy Welsh was delighted with the performance especially as he is aware that teams put out a stronger line up against City but in some cases this is down to shortage of personnel. For City’s part following on the back of a solid 3-1 victory over West Brom, this was another creditable win and only Arsenal have taken any points off City this season.
