Player confirms he’s leaving Man City, says he ‘made the decision’ not to renew contract

Eric Garcia could be on his way out of Manchester City this summer as he’s been short of playing time under Pep Guardiola and is out of contract in the coming months.

Barcelona are looking to bring the 20-year-old back to the Camp Nou next season and Garcia confirmed to Sport (h/t Sport Witness) that he “made the decision” not to renew his deal.

He stopped short of revealing where he’ll go after leaving City, but Guardiola said earlier this month that Barcelona are his next destination. Nothing has been confirmed, however.

Garcia told Sport: “I made the decision (to not renew) at the time, what I will do later I do not know, now I am focused, on City and the national team.

“(My future) is carried out by my representative; I am focused on this season, there is a last third where everything has to be played and now the three games with the national team.

“The people involved knew about it, and my relationship with Pep is the same as before the decision was made. I have a contract, and I am focused on City in case the manager thinks it is convenient that I should play.

“I was at Barça for nine years; in the end, I made the decision to go to Manchester, but I do have this feeling. I focus on what I can control, which is training one hundred percent, my representative, and when the season is over he will tell me.”

The 20-year-old joined City from Barcelona in 2017 and has gone on to make 25 appearances for the U18s, nine appearances for the U19s, 16 appearances for the U23s and 33 appearances for the first-team (Transfermarkt). Garcia has featured only 10 times from a possible 46 games this season, however, as Guardiola has preferred Ruben Dias, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte.

Garcia can’t be blamed for leaving City if he’s not getting enough minutes, but Guardiola is a big fan of the centre-back and rates him highly. Unfortunately, there is just too much competition in defence.
