UEFA President Michel Platini has been up all night feverishly typing away to bring Europeans the details and conditions of today’s Europa League knock out phase draw…

The seeded Citizens sit in Pot One safe in the knowledge that the rules dictate we will avoid unpredictable Lech Poznan and the dreadful Liverpool but could draw Championship level Glasgow Strangers.

There is a strong possibility that City could be heading for a lengthy midwinter Etihad flight to face teams from Turkey, Greece, the Ukraine or even Russia who lie in wait in Pot Two. Certainly Roberto Mancini will be hoping for a draw closer to home with his side now confirmed Premier League title contenders.

Over to Michel:

Draw conditions

The round of 32 draw will be made under the following conditions:

? Clubs from the same association must not be drawn against each other.

? No team can be drawn against the other qualifier from their group.

? The four UEFA Champions League qualifiers with the best record in their group
(Spartak, Braga, Ajax, Twente) are placed in a seeding pot with the UEFA Europa League group winners. The other four (Rubin, Basel, Rangers, Benfica) are placed with the runners-up.

? The runners-up and the lowest four ranked UEFA Champions League sides will be at home in the first leg.

Matches will be played on 17 and 24 February 2011 with the Pot 2 teams at home in the first leg.

Round of 16

The draw for the round of 16 will follow once the draw for the round 32 has been completed. There will be no seeded teams.

The 16 balls containing slips of paper for ‘Winners of match 1’ to ‘Winners of match 16’ will be placed in the large central bowl and shuffled. The first team drawn will play its first match at home against the second team drawn and the same procedure will then be repeated for the other games.

There are no restrictions on the draw. Fixtures will be played 10 and 17 March 2011.

The final will be played in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, on Wednesday 18 May 2011.
