Midfielder Fernando has declared himself pain free for the first time in a year, and whilst he has a little bit of work to do on his fitness, he’s hoping to really come back into contention for manager Manuel Pellegrini within the next fortnight if all goes well.

With Fabian Delph again going down with a hamstring injury on international duty, Fernando’s return could be a well timed boost for the gaffer as we look to build on our 100% winning record so far this year and having played 33 times last season, with most of those games involving painkilling injections in his groin to manage his problem, he looking forward to getting a run of games where he feels completely 100% himself.

Speaking to the MEN he explained.

‘I`m feeling much better and in a couple of days I will be stepping up my training programme. I`ve had this problem for a long time. I originally picked up the injury a year ago and after every game I played, it felt sore and obviously much worse. I hoped I would return after the summer break and everything would be fine, but during pre-season the pain became gradually worse again.’

Having gone back to Porto for treatment and rest, he admits that seems to have done the trick, so now he’s looking forward to getting going again having not yet featured for us at all this season.

‘It`s not been easy because on one hand, it`s been great to see the lads playing so well, but on the other you are frustrated at not being involved. Obviously I want to help my team and play my part but I needed to be clear of this injury first. I`ve been working hard to recover, I`m feeling much better now with no pain so I will resume normal training this week and hopefully be available at some point within the next fortnight. I can`t wait to get my season finally up and running and being pain free at last will be a huge relief.’
