Manchester City might be the wealthiest club in the world but what about the other 91 Football League clubs struggling with mountains of debt.
Daily reports are flooding the newswires warning of serious consequences if those in charge of their respective clubs don’t tighten in their belts. Player salaries have spiralled out of control with those at the top earning well in excess of £100,000 a week. If something isn’t done and I mean now, millions of football fans around the country will be looking to find other clubs to support as their own might well have perished.
Monthly reports emerge of clubs the length and breadth of the country facing cut-backs or close to folding. Within the last 12 months Luton Town, Bournemouth and Rotherham were on the verge of oblivion, so how can the Football Association and those in charge of game ride out the ‘credit crunch’ and save the game we all passionately love.
Speaking at the Leaders in Football conference at Stamford Bridge, Chairman Lord Triesman revealed English clubs face an uncertain financial future, as they currently owe an estimated £3billion.
