Former City player accused of ‘betrayal’ and being ‘ungrateful’

On-loan Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo has been described as being ‘ungrateful’ and accused of ‘betrayal’ after the defender completed a move to German champions Bayern Munich at the end of the January transfer window.

An article from Spanish publication Diario AS were less than impressed with the Portuguese international’s behaviour saying that his move to Munich could only have happened if there was a ‘serious’ trigger for it, and ‘something important happened’ for the transfer to be sanctioned.

Despite City boss Pep Guardiola’s history of falling out with big stars, AS described Cancelo’s surprise departure as ‘particularly striking’ and ‘almost personal’. The Spanish website believes the 28-year-old fullback owes a lot to Guardiola as the City manager turned a good full-back into the ‘best full-back in the world’ but Cancelo’s response to that has been ‘very unappreciative’. Cancelo made the Premier League Team of the Year in two consecutive seasons (20/21, 21/22) scoring 9 times and assisting a further 22 in his 154 appearances for City. Staggering statistics for a full-back.

AS are very much on Guardiola and City’s side following the departure of Cancelo and state that Spanish champions Real Madrid wanted ‘wanted nothing to do with him’ following his ordeal with the City boss.

The reigning Premier League champions play their first fixture since Cancelo’s exit tomorrow afternoon against Tottenham Hotspur, knowing a win will close the gap to leaders Arsenal to just two points.
