I have heaps of fond Mike Channon memories, and why not? My wife was born and raised a stone’s throw from where Mike Channon began playing football – Shrewton (Wiltshire) and my parents-in-law, who knew Channon’s nearest and dearest often spoke with exceptional affection about the days when Mike and his family lived in a small village in the middle of the Salisbury Plain.
I, on the other hand, have roots firmly fixed in the North-West, and so I was never tempted to change my allegiance from Manchester City towards Southampton FC, even though I was under pressure to do so – NEVER!
Mike must be described as a journeyman, but it was when he played at City was when he caught my eye. I loved his dribbles and forward runs, but let’s face it, his two year Maine Road stint failed to reach the dizzy heights from when he dazzled The Dell’s faithful.
Sunday 4 November 2018
Manchester City vs. Southampton
Kick-off – 3 pm GMT
Talking to the Daily Echo the former England forward, who turns 70 on the 28th November said Soton must hold their nerve when they face Pep Guardiola’s side.
“We’re struggling to score goals, but we’re making chances and have defended well in the last couple of games, so it’s not all doom and gloom. Even against Chelsea, we had chances.
“If they didn’t, you’d be even more worried, but it’s just a matter of time before chances are taken.
“Barren runs go with the territory, but Danny Ings has done well, and Charlie [Austin] is getting his sharpness back after injuries.
“To stay in the Premiership, you have to win games, but if you’re making chances, some will eventually be taken.
“You have to back them all and keep believing.”
Ever the optimist the Saints favourite finished off by saying: “It will be interesting, City and Liverpool look like the teams to beat this season, so it’s not going to be easy.
“But you never know in these games. Often it’s when teams are underestimated that they put it all together and get a good result.”
If you read this article (Mike), which is highly unlikely the Mundy clan say hello!
