From £41m to £22.5m, injuries, unwanted by Pep – Man City signing 27 y/o was mistake [Opinion]

Nathan Ake could be on his way out of Manchester City this summer after being told he’s surplus to requirements, said Alex Crook of talkSPORT on Thursday. The 27-year-old has struggled for regular playing time under Pep Guardiola and finds himself low down the pecking order due to stiff competition for places.

Ake has been at City for two years but is exactly where he started life at the Etihad Stadium – providing cover for John Stones, Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte. The Netherlands international hasn’t managed to nail down a starting place due to injury woes and doesn’t appear to have his manager’s trust when fit.

Ake joined City from Bournemouth for £41m in 2020, but his value has since dropped to £22.5m after 40 appearances and four goals. The 27-year-old has been left out of the matchday squad 37 times due to groin and hamstring injuries, so Guardiola has only had the centre-back available for half the matches.

So with Newcastle United being linked with a move for Ake, it’s easy to see why City would be receptive to a sale. Pep would be required to replace him in the summer transfer window, however, as he risks being short of cover.

Ake hasn’t been a good signing.

Oh dear how can a sports writer be so wrong. Terrible article. Played s big part in City’s success at the end of the season and now off to Chelsea for a profit.
